Ujung Kulon

The stay with the family in Puncak was not over yet, but I had to leave back to Bogor. Soon I would go to the Ujung Kulon National Park. So in the early morning of the 25th I took an Angkot, still sleepy after a rather short night. I didn’t missed the chance to get a Cappuccino Venti from Starbucks. I’m not really a big fan of huge international companies, but it’s just the best coffee available down here. And besides what could prepare you better for an 12 hours car ride? As I was drinking my coffee I got picked up. We collected the last passengers and it was time to hit the road. Through the mountains southwards until we reach the beach. Then to the west until we reach our destination. I enjoyed the view, saw many things and I’m unable now to name them all. But some of the pictures might help you to imagine. They are chronological by the way. I snoozed away and as I awaked the Ocean was there. Huge and majestic. We stopped for lunch. We must have been on the road already for quite some time, but I didnt checked for how long and I didn’t feel like checking. It was time to eat, our stomaches told us, that was all that really mattered. After having enjoyed the beach for the first time we continued our journey. You cannot drive all time long along the beach, sometimes you have to move inwards into the more mountainous areas. The life got simpler. The people are less hectic, more calm. The animals stroke free around the town, the roads gets worse. You must be on the way to the Kampung (Ind.: Village). Here the people depend on fishing and rice production. We had a chance to stop by another beach. This time rocky, but more beautiful since it was empty. But the clock ran on without mercy so we had to get back into our car. Our inicial plan to make it to the last bigger settlement next to the National Park before night fall failed. The bad road kept us from getting anywhere fast. So we had to stop by in Sumur, 2 road hours away from our actual destination. We stayed in an small but beautiful hotel. As the night passed by we had a breakfast before we would move on. Nutella and toast. The sweet taste can be so charming. In a good mood we moved on. Now we came to actual bad roads. Though only 35 Kilometers we needed roughly two hours. Our buts, spinals and heads could tell you stories about the quality of the road as they got shaken like hell. The road winded through the rice fields and we got hypnotized by the natural beauty of this area. Finally we made it to the Ranger Station. A rather new house and a dock in a very neat condition. We relaxed a bit, had lunch and moved on to the final destination. The rangers took us there. We passed through the Kampungs of people who still live quite traditional. The deeper we got into the National Park, the less electricity was used. The last settlement we passed was even completely without electricity. Only traditional houses standing on little columns, they are living from the fish and the rice. The rangers took us to some beaches and left us behind at the last beach. At least for some hours before they picked us up again. Being the only ones on the beach can be so beautiful. You nearly feel like it belongs to you. But the illusion only lasted until the rain came. We look for a shelter in the Kampung nearby. On the veranda of a hut we closed our eyes and listened to the waves and the rain. Suddenly the owner, a woman around 40, came back. We thought it was an empty house, but she was really nice. She showed us the sea weeds she collected to eat and to sell them on the market. As the rain ceased we dared to go back to the beach for a little while until the rangers picked us up. For the sunset we were back at the Ranger Station. First we had dinner, than we sat down on the dock and watched the sun go down. Suddenly the horn of our car waked us from our trance. Time to leave this beautiful place. I made myself comfortable in the car and slept away. Even the rough road couldn’t keep me awake. Back at the hotel place they waked me up for one last tea before we would make it back to Bogor. Being totally in the mood to sleep I went back into the car and when I woke up again Bogor was already surrounding me. We took the not so beautiful route over the toll road (high way). The others did McDonald’s a favor by eating there at 4 a.m. I wasn’t quite in the mood to eat and also i would prefer to eat somewhere else. Back home I just felt into my bed. All that stays is that feeling that I definitely have to go back there.

Tomando mí café me recogieron.
